RIAA Backs Down After Receiving Stern Letter from...
In SONY BMG v. Merchant, in California, the defendant’s lawyer wrote the RIAA a rather stern letter recounting how weak the RIAA’s evidence is, referring to the deposition of the RIAA’s expert witness, and threatening a malicious prosecution lawsuit. The very same day the RIAA put its tail between its legs and dropped the case. (via News dugg by jamiemwilkinson)

Zalmay Khalilzad is the man
Frontpage of the NYTimes this morning: ‘Senior American envoy’ Zalmay Khalilzad met with Iraqi insurgents. Interesting stuff.
Wait, what’s that on his bulletproof vest?
It’s official, Zalmay is the man.
Thanks to Annie for spotting this one.

MacFUSE sshfs vs WebDAV benchmarks
With the wonderful MacFUSE filesystem layer I can mount a remote disk using ssh — awesome. But how does it compare speed-wise to the more universally supported WebDAV? Some quick Xbench that would make my statistics professors blush:
sshfs
WebDAV
Conclusions
Whoa. I mean, whoa.
15.78 to 0.54 — sshfs is almost 30 times faster. No more WebDAV for me.

Slingshot gives a peek at the Joyent Connector...
Joyent leaps into the Rails blogosphere spotlight with Slingshot, a simple way to run Rails apps as desktop applications. I could have certainly used it with the blainedavis.com installation, which ran the site on big ol’ touchscreens. To keep it snappy we ran the site locally using Instant Rails. It wasn’t difficult to setup, but certainly wasn’t compile-&-forget. Like many other commenters...
Dubnet: collusive 4th-gen BitTorrent downloading
I have access to several servers which don’t do much with their plentiful bandwidth. I would like to exploit them to speed downloads to the DubTV, the home-rolled Linux DVR in my living room.
The Dubnet project attempts to provide a layer of communication and collaboration among a small subset of a BitTorrent swarm, providing preferential upload capacity to a central control node. This...

Faster Google Analytics with a local urchin.js
Cronjob to download it daily, pageloads are sooo much faster. www.google-analytics.com is down right now, too, so it’s really the only way to fly. (via del.icio.us/jamiew)
$6 for free; no joke
At Jelly last Thursday a cash-strapped Adam introduced everyone to pay-by-text service Obopay by texting me a $4 reimbursement for covering his gyro. It was pretty neat — I could actually see myself using the service occasionally. But the best part is that they give you $5 for signing up, and Adam got $5 for referring me… so Obopay paid for both our lunches. Two cheers for insane promotional...

Broken urchinTracker calls; Google Analytics down
Noticed Firebug picking up Javascript “urchinTracker is not defined” errors on 6bucksforfree last night ~2am EST but didn’t pay much attention. This morning I’m getting them on every website I load (which certainly says something about the service’s popularity)
Looks like www.google-analytics.com is down, which is the site they suggest everyone use for the urchin.js script.

$6... for free
http://6bucksforfree.com Register for a new pay-by-text service and they put cash in your pocket, no catch. They want a fair bit of personal information to confirm your identity, but I used this like crazy to pay people back when I was out of cash and it works like a champ, so we hacked our own referral system onto it to spread the love. Kudos for Diggs & delicious bookmarks (via Jamie...

God is Vane - Or So Poon Tells Us
How does a counter-culture underground brand strike a balance between being hip and selective yet corporate and profitable? In this interview with Vane creative director Eric Poon, we find out if the pressures of corporate America have gotten to Vane, if his vanity has anything to do with his being single, and why Wal-Mart isn’t all smiley faces.
